Keep in Mind

Assume you are registered for the team you choose unless you are notified differently.

GOTR teams meet at the front door of the school on the first day of practice, unless you are notified of special arrangements.

Rainy/Snowy Weather — GOTR teams will meet regardless of the weather, UNLESS the schools close.

Starting GOTR

How to bring Girls on the Run to a new school:

  1. Identify a site to host the program. Most of our programs are offered at schools, but recreation centers or similar venues also are acceptable.
  2. Contact the principal/headmaster to seek approval for a GOTR team. GOTR-Nebraska will supply all necessary information before your meeting with the school/site official.
  3. The site is responsible for providing:
    1. A contact person at the site to coordinate with GOTR-Nebraska.
    2. A safe place for running for two one-hour lessons per week. Note: This does not have to be a track, a field is acceptable.
    3. A rain site (gym, cafeteria, classroom, hallway, e.g.)
    4. A method to distribute registration forms to all girls (weekly take-home folders and school newsletters are good)
    5. An acceptable time to deliver a brief presentation/talk about Girls on the Run to eligible girls (lunchtime is the most common)
  4. Recruit two to three female coaches from the school/site community (teachers, mothers, staff members) who must attend a four-hour training session before the season
  5. Determine days and times for GOTR practices by May 5 for the fall session or Dec. 5 for the spring season.
  6. Recruit girls for a team. A minimum of eight participants is required to host a GOTR program. Sites with three or more coaches can accommodate up to 24 girls. Each site is provided with registration brochures and promotional literature.
    1. Marketing the program entails:
      1. Sending brochures home in weekly folders with girls in eligible grades
      2. Running a “blurb” in the school’s or principal’s newsletter
Delivering a 10-minute presentation to girls in eligible grades during lunch, recess, P.E. or another acceptable time.
  7. Contact Amy at (402) 610-5355 for more information about launching a GOTR program at a new site.
